My Favorite Guitar's History

My favorite guitar is my Larrivee OM-05MT. I was thinking about how I got it the other day and realized that it has a rather long history and has morphed from guitar to banjo to mandolin and back to guitar. Its history is:

1. In the late 80’s, I bought a used Guild X-150B.
2. Sometime in the early 90’s I traded that guitar for a new Yamaha 12 string. (this was the stupidest trade in this whole process, IMHO).
3. Shortly after, I traded that 12 string for a used old open-back banjo with a nicely inlaid neck.
4. In the year 2000 or so, I traded that banjo for a new Weber Y2K mandolin.
5. In the mid 2000’s I traded that mandolin for a fancier Epiphone F-style mandolin. (second stupidest trade)
6. Shortly after (because I never bonded with that mando at all) I traded that mandolin for a new Weber Gallatin F mandolin (with some cash from a tax return).
7. A couple of years ago, I traded the Weber Gallatin for the Larrivee OM-05MT.

And here we are. Somewhat convoluted but I’m sure somewhat similar to some of yours. I’d love to hear some of them.

Looks like a beauty, but it took 3 mandolins AND a banjo to get there?!

Great story! Mine's simpler: Didn't play steel strings for a long time. Bought a Taylor. Bought a Larrivee. Sold Taylor. Bought Collings. Bought H&D. Traded H&D for SCGC. Still have Larrivee.

OK. I'm still looking for the perfect Breedlove. Just can't make up my mind which guitar I'll get rid of BUT IT WON'T BE THE LARRIVEE.

What Larry do you have ffinke? I had a Pete Anderson which I wish to God I never sold. It was a great sounding axe besides being a tank.

My Larri is a 2007 L-03. It has had the finish buffed out so, even though it's not what would be called gloss, it's very shiny (like I like 'em). I've upgraded the tuners to Gotoh 381 (same as what is stock on B'Loves now) and, as I said, it rivals anything I've ever owned.

I think the key is that too many people assume a "factory" set-up is sufficient. WRONG! Get it set-up correctly and it becomes a keeper.
