Clip-on Tuners. What features are important to you? Empty Clip-on Tuners. What features are important to you?

I love clip-on tuners! Currently, I have: $70 Peterson StroboClip SC-1; $30 Snark All Instrument SN-2; and $30 Meisel Chromatic Tuner MCT-7L. The reason I have 3 different tuners is because I am always searching to find a tuner that performs quickly, accurately, and is easily readable in the dark and in sunlight.

With that in mind, I am most pleased with the Snark product. I find its color display makes it VERY easy to read in sunlight, and it is also easy to see if the note is flat (red), sharp (yellow), or in tune (green). Equally, it responds quickly and holds the meter's needle steady.

The Peterson screen is backlit with an amber-like color while its "needle" is a light shade of black. Unless you are perfectly in tune, the "needle" moves constantly as the note decays or varies (an issue with older strings!)... which is fine for precise accuracy... but it is disconcerting when making a quick glance for a tuning status.

The Meisel product is slower reacting... which frustrates me when I am in a hurry. The screen is backlit in bright lime green color, but the needle readings are all in black... and not that pronounced because of the narrow needle/line. As a result it is hard to read quickly.

So there are my evaluations and basis for a “perfect” clip-on tuner. What are the 3 most the most important features you want in a clip-on tuner? Mine are: (1) Easy viewing readability; (2) quick response; and (3) note accuracy.

Agree with you on the Snark. I also like the Planet Waves. Both are easy to read, quick and accurate (or at least they agree with each other!).

Love the Snark tuner we picke up two at the guitar show in July it was two for 30 bucks. I couldn't be happier with it. Were heading back to the show in Nov. I plan on picking up a few more.

All the things you mentioned are inportant Harry. The one advantage for me is the "sweetened" tunings available on the Peterson line. I program my own, and use them on every different tuning I use. You can even make them specific. You cant program them on the clip on version, but I use them enough on the flip and rack versions that I can tune to the same frequency on the clip. I think the sweeteners, even the presets on the clip, are worth the price of admission.

But I am a self confessed Stroboaholic.

Stability, chromatic accuracy, visibility.

BTW: the Snark SN-2 fits the bill nicely.

Last night I used another clip-on tuner and am strongly considering throwing it away. It was horrifically slow to respond and it rattled. The Snark (short of a Peterson strobe) is the best I've used. It's stable, great accuracy (for me), responds immediately and the red/green dial is very visible. So it gets all three of my points and then some!
