Seventh String Guitar and Mandolin Facebook page started today
Since things have been quiet here, understandably so, since Facebook is so potent and a catch all for places to go and people to see, we have started a page there to post to. All the mods will be there within a day or so. Come on over.
The name is as you see in the subject line above.

May be a good idea, but I don't go to facebook much, whereas I check in here daily. Of course, that's just me.

I'm with you Mando. I'm not a facebook kind of guy. I'm not into texting either. Maybe some day I'll weaken.

I made the leap. Thanks to Jeff, I am now a proud member of Seventh String Guitar and Mandolin on Facebook. Hope to see you guys over there. I was wondering, is T.A.S., with "T" for Technology, similar to G.A.S? Boy I hope not. First Facebook and then who knows what'll be next. I like my rotary dial phone and typewriter.

I have to say, I'm a little down about this whole Facebook idea. I'm not on it and probably never will be. It was nice to see this site up and running again after the last forum shut down. This site doesnt have near the activity that the last one had but I was hoping it would pick up. Now with the facebook addition I dont see it happening. SAD!

EZ, I couldn't agree with you more. It makes you wonder where everyone went. I don't understand why there wasn't anywhere near the activity that we had at the old forum. I definitely prefer the format of a forum to that of Facebook. Anybody else out there with an opinion???

I have an opinion, but it's basically the same as you two. I've become less interested in Facebook as time has passed. Before Jeff set up the FB page, I was wondering about looking into how to un-enroll from it.gtrbill wrote:EZ, I couldn't agree with you more. It makes you wonder where everyone went. I don't know why folks deserted either forum; I check in daily, and did the former while it was active. I only go to FB when they tell me I have activity to check, but I've turned off almost all notifications there. I don't like e-mail clutter.

It seems like we're on the same page. The little bit I've seen on Facebook hasn't done much for me. I liked the way the Forum brought out a lot of good discussions, music, humor, ... It seems Facebook is more of banter. Maybe I need to give it more of a chance, but in the few days I've been involved it really hasn't drawn me in. Meanwhile I'll still be checking in here at the Forum to see if the activity picks up. Anybody know where everyone went? Maybe they can just afford longer vacations and hopefully they'll be back soon!

FB is mostly people blabbering about what they're doing, thinking, or whatever, not discerning what's worth telling the world.

I just quit facebook a few weeks ago. Dumped my youtube site as well. Too much time on the internet, fretting about my vanity, if people are listening, and sick of fake friends.
But I play the guitar more now.

Re: Seventh String Guitar and Mandolin Facebook page started today
Has anyone been on Facebook? That seems to be such a wide open network and I, for one, am a little skittish about publishing ANYTHING on that forum. It seems like it gets broadcast all over and who knows what they do with the information.
Of course I preferred the old forum and still feel that when Breedlove's sale settles down many of us will return to this forum and it will grow.
That's just my opinion but at least it's MINE!

Let's hope you're right. The old forum was a comfortable place to exchandge ideas, music, etc. From what I've seen of Facebook (in just a short time) is a lot of superficicial commenting on miscellaneous mediocre topics. I'm still wondering where everyone from the forum disappeared to in the last few months? Are we missing something?

I looked a bit the first few days at FB, but not lately. There was a lot of activity; the kind of volume we used to have at the old forum. I don't know why it's easy to do there, but not on a controlled access forum.

I think it's due to two facts: 1) The homey feel of the Breedlove Brand itself, and 2) A lot of people figured that when the old forum died, a new one would not be resurrected.
Macnichol Guitars did a wonderful job of trying to hold the group together but as up front as they were there was that overtone of commercialism that maybe put a lot of people off. And then when this forum was established the numbers had just dwindled to a very few. And to top it off, I, like many others, belong to other forums - some for just passing interest and some for social interaction. I really hope this little slice of the internet community returns to its former glory.

Despite being an early member of each of the forums, I never got the news of Mac's effort until after this forum started, so I've no idea what happened there, but the old forum was a very homey place, & it was nice seeing the old folks join in here, briefly.
I really don't like Facepuke.

Re: Seventh String Guitar and Mandolin Facebook page started today
The 'old' forum is really moot since it became impossible to obtain support. Being the only one to keep it going behind the scenes, without support, I can't troubleshoot alone. I am not a software coder. Yuku sold to KickApps and that is when the trouble started. The Martin forum is fine out there cuz they have plenty of active admins who work and monitor it, and very strong income from members. We had very little and rapidly decreasing income and one active admin.
As far as this forum goes, not many have been posting, so I slapped up the Facebook as a beta since Forummotion, the owner of this forum, is in the process of configuring Facebook into the interface. The Facebook group is only an adjucnt to what you see here. If you don't dig it, cool. Those that only cruise Facebook, and there are millions that roll that way, can easily add their two cents there, and go on about their way. It is likely they are checking more than just our group while there, so Facebook has become a sort of one stop shop for many people from different generations.
For one, since I began school in March, I only have time to surf my school's private, independent, Facebook group for student-driven support in my concentration. In fact, it's such a huge deal for many schools, there are two psych Facebook groups for my school. I think my university has 5 groups that I am aware of, including one for library, and another for writing skills, sponsored by the university. Between the two psych groups there are about 270 members. That's a ton for one university's psych grad program, and there is quite a bit of help going on out there. Each Facebook group has different goals. Some are private, some public, well, you get the idea.
It just depends what your wish is. Do what floats your own boat. The mods here have been busy with other things apparently. I know I have 1/5th the time I used to. I check my school support board, whip a post at Facebook, then back to the books. Not much time to spare.
Chip in where you like, when you like. That's all that can be expected. Things go in cycles. It's kinda like the immense rise in the use of ATM's and drive thrus at banks or wherever you see an ATM. The quicker you get your money, the more you will use that method to tender your transaction (old Money and Banking theory from b.school).
Same with Facebook. Unless you have this forum set as your homepage, arriving here is like having to get out of your car and walk in to get your 20 or 50 bucks for the next few hours of fun. Some will do that, but most do not. Facebook is like an ATM. Drive up, make a deposit or take your information out, and go on your way to do what you want.
I went into the bank today to close and account that I don't need cuz of a lifestyle change. Can't do that at the drive up. Same thing here. A lot more info and banter can be wound out here on the forum. Let's jump in and wind it out. This thread is the longest one since forever. Let's get back to guitars and mandos and look at the Facebook as an ATM machine planted on your favorites bar or whereever you do your one stop shopping. Or, drive over here, walk in and sit down for some coffee and relax. It's your choice, and instead of one option you have two; Forummotion is in the process of integrating it so we will see how that manifests.

Omegaman! Nicely stated.
As long as there is the "thought provoking" option available I'll continue to monitor this forum. Thanks for the insight and good luck in school.

Re: Seventh String Guitar and Mandolin Facebook page started today
Jeff,
I see where you're coming from and I appreciate your efforts. I'll continue to keep an eye on this forum and I'll check out out the facebook page, although probably not as often. There's a different "feel" at the forum. Although we've all most likely had limited face to face contact, the forum always had a homey feeling.
I'm an old school kind of guy. So, as far as your bank ananlogy, I guess I prefer the drive-up window with the usual tellers or actually going inside and talking to a live person. I'm not one to use ATM's either. I might have one foot in the stone age, but I'm comfortable there. That's just me.
But, as you say, let's get back to discussions about guitars and music ...
